How To Update Kitchen Cabinets On The Cheap

Walk into your kitchen and what do you see? Chances are the most prevalent component in your sights are the cabinets. Since they take up so much real estate in the room, they will be the thing that makes or breaks the aesthetic you’ve created.

So how do your cabinets look? Do they have a modern appearance or does it feel like you’ve gone back in time? What condition are they in, bright and shiny or faded, chipped, and dusty? The condition of your kitchen is going to be largely dependent on the condition of your cabinets and if they are in poor repair, then your kitchen is in need of a serious renovation.

But those can be expensive and out of reach for homeowners with a limited amount of financial resources. However, there is some good news…you don’t need to live with your faded or damaged cabinets much longer.

If you can’t afford a complete remodel of your kitchen, you have a number of affordable options in front of you that are going to cost far less while providing your cabinets with an updated, refurbished appearance to make you want to spend time in there all over again.

New Paint

The easiest and cheapest choice is to just simply give your cabinets a whole new paint job. Sometimes all you need to update your kitchen is some new color. You’d be surprised how much difference a new coat of paint can make to this or any room of the house.

The best part is, you can do it all yourself. Make a family project out of it by getting the paint, some brushes, some tarps, and some sandpaper and you can have your kitchen looking brand new by the end of the weekend!

Just be warned, if your cabinets are showing serious signs of wear and tear in the form of damage or compromised functionality then painting them is only going to be a short-term fix to a bigger problem.

New Hardware

If painting isn’t the answer for you, then maybe you can focus on the smaller things. Specifically the hardware on your cabinets in the form of those handles and knobs you use to open and close your doors and drawers.

Maybe all you need to do is switch those out to give your kitchen a whole new look. If your handles and knobs are stuck in the 80’s head out to your local hardware store to get all new, modern-looking replacements to attach instead.

To make it even easier on you, look for handles and knobs that only require the same number of drill holes that your old hardware uses. No sense in getting new handles that need three drill holes if your current versions only need two. The same thing goes for your knobs, one hole knobs should be more than sufficient to get the job done.

New Veneers

Painting and new hardware isn’t really going to make the kind of difference you’re hoping to see in your kitchen. No problem, just look for contractors who do cabinet refacing in Richmond, VA and give them a call.

Refacing your cabinets utilizes brand new veneers over the front of your existing cabinets to make it look like you just had them remodeled, but without the price.

But again, like with painting your cabinets, you need to give them a good long look to make sure they are still in proper working order. Otherwise the money you spend having them refaced is going to end up being a waste of resources.

New Molding

You can refinish kitchen cabinets or you can just a little extra something along the edges instead. New molding can spruce up an old kitchen in no time, just apply it to the perimeter areas of your cabinets and you’ll be amazed at the improvement.

The price is right, with some options costing very little depending on what type you select. So you can work within any budget to give your cabinets a brand new look. Even the most subtle option will be immediately noticeable and make you feel like you’ve moved into a new home.

New Lighting

Sounds too costly, right? Not at all. You have a wide range of choices from which to choose when it comes to adding a lighting component to your kitchen cabinets. Sometimes it can be as simple as applying some type of light source beneath the cabinets, in other kitchens, you may want to add some lighting above so that the entire room is brighter.
